Laser Cutter Training
Jan 17 @ 10:00 – 12:00

I’m going to put on laser training on Saturday, Jan 17, at 10 am, if I get sufficient interest.

To take the class you must have taken the basic safety training and be a member in good standing (i.e. paid-up) at the Space.

Let’s shoot for 10 people in the course, but if there is interest we might be able to do more.

Note that this training is specific to the use of the Laser hardware and LaserCut 6.0 (the software that runs the hardware). It does not cover the CAD programs typically used to do the drawings. For the most part most programs that can give you a DXF file will do.

We will do classroom work, demonstrations, and we can do some small individual projects, time permitting, if you want some hands-on. Please bring a ready-to-go DXF file on a memory stick for this if you want to do a cut or an engrave. Also, if you have specific material you want to have a go at, bring a chunk along.

Questions welcome in-thread if you think it will benefit others. Sign-ups in thread too.

Cost for the course is $5.00 to the space for the next laser related crisis (you know it’s coming).

Blair.

Tabletop Games Night
Jan 17 @ 19:00
So the last tabletop night we did at the space was lots of goodly fun.
I do believe it’s time for us to schedule another, so we can get our quarterly social quota filled :)
Time to start would probably be 7, mini-makers are welcome from then until 9 pm.
Last time people brought a selection of nibbles, which was a lovely addition to a good selection of games brought by numerous people, so I will ask for similar contributions. Non-members are welcome to attend with a minimum $5 donation to the space.
If you’re interested in coming, just post in the thread (protospace-discuss) or message me directly. Questions and suggestions welcome.

CAM Course (Tormach)
Jan 25 @ 10:00 – 16:30

I have had enough interest to follow through on my plans to offer a CAM course for the Tormach on Sunday, Jan 25th at 10 am. Attendance will be capped at 15 and will be closed on Jan 16th, after which, no new attendees will be accepted.

The current plan for this course is that it will be tought in either Fusion360 OR HSMWorks express for SolidWorks. Both these software packages will be acceptable to attend the course with. It may change closer to the date to be Fusion 360 only. SolidWorks will NOT be a prerequisite for the course. Fusion 360 can be downloaded and installed for free from Autodesk. If you are using fusion 360 please complete some of the tutorials and have a good understanding of how to use the programs. Being unable to use the program at the start of the course will require you having to re-take it before continuing.

All members must have completed lathe training. If you are on the list to attend lathe training but have not yet completed it you may attend but will not be able to do the practical cut part of the course until after you have completed the lathe training. If the course is full, members without lathe training may be bumped for members who have completed it. This course is only available to vetted members.

The second part of the course consists of using Mach 3 and the Tormach itself including start up, the practical cut where you will make a set of sacrificial jaws followed by cleanup and shut down. This will be schedule on an individual basis AFTER completing the course and will take about 2 hours.

The cost of the course is 30$ to cover the cost of material for the project, a 3/8″ 2 flute end-mill, yours to keep + 1 coffee (lg, 1c1sw) , Due at the start of the practical portion of the course. Further coffee may be required as payment to supervise/help out with your first job on your own project. Due to the amount of information covered and the exorbitantly high cost of a major mistake it is STRONGLY recommended (read: mandatory) that your first job or two done on the Tormach is checked over and supervised untill you have gained confidence on the workflow of the machine.

Laser Cutter Training
Feb 21 @ 10:00 – 12:30
The next Laser Cutter/Engraving course is on the calendar for Saturday, Feb 21, at 10:00 am. The course itself should wind up about noon, but there will be an opportunity for a some projects and cutting after the course.
To take the class you must have taken the basic safety training and be a member in good standing (i.e. paid-up) at the Space. Probationary members (non-vetted) may attend but will not receive access until they are vetted. Young members may attend if accompanied by an adult.

The absolute maximum number of participants is 12. We will run the course if there are at least 4 sign-ups

Note that this training is specific to the use of the Laser hardware and LaserCut 6.0 (the software that runs the hardware). It does not cover the CAD programs typically used to do the drawings. For the most part most programs that can give you a DXF file will do.

We will do classroom work, demonstrations, and discussion. If you would like to have a chance to cut your own project, please bring a ready-to-go DXF file on a memory stick (or put it on a one-drive/google-drive/dropbox or similar web-accessible cloud). Also, if you have specific material you want to have a go at, bring a chunk along.

There is no charge to attend, but attendees must coordinate the delivery of at least one cup of coffee to the instructor. (Snacks and more coffee are up to the participants.)
Questions may be addressed on one of these threads. -discuss is probably the better thread unless its about, well, -administration.
IMPORTANT! Do not email the list/group or the instructors with “Is this still happening?” or “How do I sign up?” If the course is cancelled or changed, we will announce it here, AND email the individuals. If you sign up, you are EXPECTED to attend or advise the instructors as early as possible. For this course, you can email me directly if you need to de-register.
If you’ve gotten this far, you appear qualified to know the super-secret sign-up process. Go to http://goo.gl/forms/0hLmFI47Pd and fill out the form. Real Name and Working Email are required.
New Member Orientation and General Safety Training

Tabletop Games Night
Feb 21 @ 19:00
Come join us for some goodly fun!
Games will start around 7, but you are welcome to come and go as needed, so latecomers are welcome — but you may have to wait for a seat in a game or a new round to start (or, start up a new game!)  Bring whatever games you enjoy playing, or pick one from the shelf in the Members’ Lounge. We have fairly broad interests, and a good variety of people, so there is lots of choice.
Mini makers are welcome (as always, accompanied by a parent or guardian), and therefore, family-friendly games will be the norm until 9:00 pm, after which more adult fare may be played as interest demands.
Food and beverages are supplied by the participants (you!), so in the interest of public nutritional variation, please consider that everyone defaults to bringing donuts!
In particular, the April 11 edition is in celebration of International Tabletop Day, so check out http://tabletopday.com.
