Laser Cutter Training
Apr 25 @ 12:00 – 14:30
The next Laser Cutter/Engraving course is on the calendar for Saturday, April 25, at noon. The course itself should wind up about noon, but there will be an opportunity for a some projects and cutting after the course.
To take the class you must have taken the basic safety training and be a member in good standing (i.e. paid-up) at the Space. Probationary members (non-vetted) may attend but will not receive access until they are vetted. Young members may attend if accompanied by an adult.

The absolute maximum number of participants is 12. We will run the course if there are at least 4 sign-ups

Note that this training is specific to the use of the Laser hardware and LaserCut 6.0 (the software that runs the hardware). It does not cover the CAD programs typically used to do the drawings. For the most part most programs that can give you a DXF file will do.We will do classroom work, demonstrations, and discussion. If you would like to have a chance to cut your own project, please bring a ready-to-go DXF file on a memory stick (or put it on a one-drive/google-drive/dropbox or similar web-accessible cloud). Also, if you have specific material you want to have a go at, bring a chunk along.
IMPORTANT! Do not email the list/group or the instructors with “Is this still happening?” or “How do I sign up?” If the course is cancelled or changed, we will announce it here, AND email the individuals. If you sign up, you are EXPECTED to attend or advise the instructors as early as possible. For this course, you can email me directly if you need to de-register.
If you’ve gotten this far, you appear qualified to know the super-secret sign-up process. Go to http://goo.gl/forms/0hLmFI47Pd and fill out the form. Real Name and Working Email are required.

Introductory photography course
May 10 @ 10:00 – 16:00

Things this course will cover:

Basic Composition – Rules you should learn to use when composing an image. Then when to throw the rules away.

Shooting People – You might be surprised to learn that there are a LOT of rules about this. You might even call them “laws”. Make people look their best.

SLR 101 – Your shutter speed, aperture, and ISO are frenemies. Learn how to make them get along with each other, and even with Becky. (it doesn’t matter how bad her acne is, she’s a person with feelings darnnit!)

The Big M - How to use your camera in M (Manual) Mode. Why you should use it and why you should never want to use that green auto mode again.

Camera Optimization – The default settings on your camera are not always the most helpful. Bend them to your will “with this one weird trick” that’s not acai, but rather, Custom Functions and Settings.

Flash – Most consumer and prosumer DSLRs have a built-in flash. It’s really good to use in some situations, in others, it ruins everything. Yes, everything. Have you seen oil prices? Dollars to donuts there was an improperly used built-in flash involved.

RAW – Whether or not it’s Monday night, you should be shooting in RAW. What you’re missing if you’re shooing jpg, and how you could be making more work for yourself brotha!

Shooting and Critique time – Come ready to be judged! But don’t worry, you get to judge others too. Positively… This is honestly the best part. You might make us “oooo and ahhh” and putting things into practice will help make everything stick.

CAM Course (Tormach)
Jun 13 @ 10:00 – 16:00

Training for the Tormach consists of two parts.

The first part is using CAM which is the software used to generate programs for the CNC mill. You have two options in software to use in this course you can use either:

  • Fusion 360, or
  • HSMWorks express for SolidWorks.

SolidWorks and the CAD course will NOT be a prerequisite for the course. Fusion 360 can be downloaded and installed for free from Autodesk. If you are using Fusion 360 please complete some of the tutorials and have a good understanding of how to use the programs. Being unable to use the program at the start of the course will require you having to re-take it before continuing. HSMWorks Express is a free Add-in for SolidWorks and is functionally identical to the CAM used by Fusion 360. If you plan on using HSMWorks, attending the CAD course in SolidWorks is required.

All members must have completed lathe training. If you are on the list to attend lathe training but have not yet completed it you may attend but will not be able to do the practical cut part of the course until after you have completed the lathe training. If the course is full, members without lathe training may be bumped for members who have completed it. This course is only available to vetted members.

The second part of the course consists of using Mach 3 and the Tormach itself including start up, the practical cut where you will make a set of sacrificial jaws followed by cleanup and shut down. This will be schedule in pairs AFTER completing the course and will take about 3-4 hours per pair.

The cost of the course is 30$ to cover the cost of material for the project, a 3/8″ 2 flute end-mill, yours to keep + 1 coffee (lg, 1c1sw) , Due at the start of the practical portion of the course. Further coffee may be required as payment to supervise/help out with your first job on your own project. Due to the amount of information covered and the exorbitantly high cost of a major mistake it is STRONGLY recommended (read: mandatory) that your first job or two done on the Tormach is checked over and supervised until you have gained confidence on the workflow of the machine.

The course will be capped at 12 people, with signup closing on June 10th, after which no new people will be accepted

Any questions, please contact Danny or reply to the thread on the admin group.
